Serverless platforms are a new breed of cloud computing services that allow developers to build and run applications without having to manage the underlying infrastructure. The platform provider takes care of provisioning, scaling, load balancing etc., so you can focus on your application code instead.

There are two types of Serverless Platforms. The first is a platform that provides the ability to deploy and run functions on-demand, without having to manage any infrastructure or servers. This type of serverless platform is also known as Function-as-a-Service (FaaS). Examples include AWS Lambda, Google Cloud Functions, Azure Functions and IBM OpenWhisk. These platforms allow you to write code in languages such as NodeJS/JavaScript or Python which can be executed when an event occurs (such as an HTTP request) or at scheduled intervals using cron expressions. You pay for each execution based on how much compute time your function uses per second – typically between $0.00001-$0.001 per millisecond depending upon the provider’s pricing model used by region where it runs ($10K+ / month if running 24×7).The other type of Serverless Platform allows you to build applications with no need for managing any underlying infrastructure whatsoever; this includes both FaaS providers like Amazon Web Services but also PaaS providers like Microsoft Azure App Service who have added support for deploying “serverless” apps via their portal UI directly from Visual Studio 2017.
